Is Marmite in NZ the same as
Marmite in the U.K?
No - Marmite in the United Kingdom and Marmite in
NZ are made using different recipes, and are owned
by two different companies. Sanitarium owns and manufactures
Marmite here in NZ (in Christchurch) and Unilever
owns and makes Marmite in the UK.
Does
Marmite have any meat in it?
Absolutely not - Marmite is a meat-free product and
always has been. It is perfectly suitable for vegetarians.
Where did Marmite come from?
Originally, from England. As a food, it was discovered
as early as 1680 but was first manufactured for commercial
purposes in 1902 in England. Sanitarium bought the
rights to distribute Marmite in Australia and NZ back
in 1908, with Marmite making it's first appearance
on NZ shelves in 1910.
Is
there really any difference between Marmite and Vegemite?
Are you for real? Of course there is! You only have
to lift the lid and smell the difference - people
are divided and it's an age-old family dispute as
to which is superior. Both have different recipes
- one is proudly Australian, the other a patriotic
Kiwi.
What is Marmite made of?
Basically, Marmite is a yeast extract - a by-product
of the brewing industry. We throw in some secret herbs
and spices to make the best savoury spread in the
world - check out the
nutritional info on this site for a full ingredient
list and nutritional breakdown.
Are Marmite jars recyclable?
Yes, definitely. The jars we use carry the recycling
symbol "1" so they can be recycled.
Are Marmite and Vegemite both
made in NZ?
They used to be - Vegemite recently pulled out of
NZ and have gone back home to Australia where they
belong. Marmite was not only the first, but is also
the ONLY yeast spread made in New Zealand.
How
do I get hold of NZ Marmite when I'm overseas?
It's tough, we know. Trying to get any kiwi foods
that you love when you live overseas is very difficult,
unless you've got loaded friends and family who can
send you stuff. But we did think this website was
pretty cool www.shopnewzealand.co.nz.
